I’m hesitant to write this and post it on the internet because I know people get really easily offended about this stuff and I have a lot of conflicting thoughts about this. But I really feel like this needs to be said.

I’m struggling with some things. I feel like I’m hanging on to people that aren’t necessarily good for me and I feel like facebook makes it really difficult to let go. So I wrote a blog post about it. And the nature of friendship. And some other stuff so just go read it if you care.

But seriously, if you have any thoughts on this topic, I would love to hear them

I meant to write about this earlier but I got distracted until now.

I was watching Jeopardy this evening. Nothing unusual there. I usually watch Jeopardy when I have access to a TV. Anyway.

The returning champion was a man, probably in his 30s or 40s, whose three day cash winnings totaled about $70,000. Cool. Good for him. This is actually pretty irrelevant. Relevant: the other two contestants were women. One of the women was middle-aged. Roughly in her 40s or 50s. The other woman was a bit younger, probably early 30s, but it was hard to tell.

Alex Trebek kept referring to the younger woman as “Young Lady.” He kept saying things like, “And you, young lady, are now trailing the lead by $2000,” or something like that. I found it really disconcerting and condescending. He never said anything about “Young Lad” to the man or anything like “Old Lady” to the older woman. Just the younger woman.

Every time Alex said “Young Lady” I cringed. She was very intelligent. She did very well. She didn’t win. The man did, once again. Good for him. But I can’t help but wonder if she got annoyed with Alex for him repeatedly referring to her as if she was twelve years old. I can’t help but wonder if it made her lose her focus.

I know this isn’t the first time Alex has made some less than tactful comments to and about contestants. He does comment on race or gender more often than he should. It’s not a part of the show. These are incredibly smart men and women who get question after question right. Why does he insist on pointing out these minor differences people have? They have no relevance to the show.

I hate to be such a downer. I love Jeopardy. It makes me sad that this keeps happening, because I also love Alex Trebek. Jeopardy wouldn’t be the same without him. He just needs to stop with the sexist and racist comments.

If I ever make it on the show and he calls me “Young Lady” or anything else other than my name, I’m going to call him out on it. Because it’s not appropriate. It’s not cute or sweet. It’s condescending and patronizing. And it needs to stop.

A blog post in which I (ironically) reevaluate how much I use the internet and how it may or may not be making me happy. Just things I’ve been thinking about lately. That I thought I’d share with the entire world? I guess.
